COLLABORATION TO IMPROVE LEGAL EDUCATION

Legal education is in a sea of change. The demands of law practice today require law students to be fully prepared and ready for the practice of law upon graduation. It used to be that there was time for this. Meaning, students were given practical skills and further developed their professional identities through apprenticeships or mentorships; however, this trend has greatly declined. Thus, it is now incumbent upon law schools and professors to integrate practical skills training and professional identity formation into the classrooms, especially doctrinal courses. Professor Madison has created the Pretrial Practice & State Civil Procedure Listserv for those interested in collaborating on teaching methods. The project is designed to be a vehicle for creating a community of professors (as well as judges and lawyers, who often teach these courses as adjuncts) in which the members can trade ideas, discuss methods of teaching state procedure, and compare different pedagogical approaches.
